Destiny 2 Unvaulting: What Bungie Confirmed and What It Means

On September 21, 2026, Bungie said it is bringing back every piece of Destiny 2 content it removed over the past six years. There is no release date. Here is what was actually promised, what is still guesswork, and what it changes for you.

What Bungie announced

The announcement came in a post titled "The Next Chapter for Bungie," published alongside a video. Game Rant reported that studio head Poria Torkan and head of product Josh Deane committed to restoring vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids, with Bungie acknowledging that removing them damaged player trust.

Deane's framing in the video was direct: Bungie is committing to unvault the campaigns, destinations and raids that, in the studio's own words, should never have been taken away. Tweaktown covered the full statement.

Three months earlier this looked impossible. Bungie had announced in May 2026 that Destiny 2 was ending live service, and PC Gamer reported that the June 9 update would be the last. GameDaily reported that Bungie then laid off roughly 400 of its approximately 800 staff on June 25, 2026, with most of the Destiny team affected.

What is coming back

Bungie's commitment covers all vaulted content, not a selection. The Gamer lists the removed material as including the Red War base campaign, the Year 1 expansions Curse of Osiris and Warmind, and the Forsaken campaign, along with their destinations and raids.

What Bungie has not published is an ordered list. There is no confirmed "first wave." Any article telling you which campaign returns first is guessing.

When you can actually play it

Timeline of Destiny 2 events in 2026, from the May end-of-service announcement to Bungie's September 21 unvaulting reversal.

Four months separated Bungie calling time on Destiny 2 and committing to restore everything it had removed.

No date. Bungie said the work is technically difficult and will take months. Softonic notes that Paul Tassi's estimate is sometime next year, which is a reporter's projection rather than a Bungie commitment.

Treat the gap between announcement and playable content as long. The restored content has to work inside a game that has changed substantially since any of it was removed.

Will it cost anything

Probably not, but this is not officially confirmed. Tassi reports the restored campaigns, raids and locations are expected to be free for everyone, including players who never bought them originally. Bungie has not stated pricing itself.

Why Bungie changed its mind

Two-column comparison listing what Bungie confirmed about the unvaulting against what remains unconfirmed, including release date and pricing.

Bungie confirmed the commitment but not the schedule, the order, or the price. Most reporting blurs the two columns.

Player response did more work here than anything else. KitGuru reported that the Monument of Triumph update saw higher engagement than Destiny 2's previous two expansions, despite being billed as the ending, and that Bungie credits the persistence of Destiny players with the reassessment.

The commercial logic lines up with that. Sony's other standout live-service performer is not actually Sony's: Arrowhead's CEO has repeatedly confirmed the Helldivers 2 studio is independently owned, and the studio has since said its next project is self-funded and not tied to PlayStation. Destiny remains the largest live-service franchise Sony actually owns outright.

What is not confirmed is any claim that Sony has allocated extra headcount or budget to the unvaulting. That has been speculated, not reported as fact.

What it means for Marathon

List of Destiny 2 content removed to the Content Vault, including the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken campaigns.

Six years of removals, including the game's original campaign. Bungie has not said which returns first.

Bungie is now running two games with a much smaller team, and Marathon's schedule has already changed as a result. In a development update on September 14, 2026, Bungie confirmed:

  • The content planned for September now ships in the Symbiosis update on December 8, 2026, including a new Runner shell, permanent PvE, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, an experimental TDM mode, and onboarding improvements.

  • A smaller Nightfall Refresh on October 6, 2026 resets progression and the in-game economy.

  • Marathon is dropping fixed seasonal deadlines entirely. Aftermath confirmed there will be no third season.

PC Gamer notes Marathon's Steam concurrents have continued to sag, which is the backdrop to both the schedule change and the renewed Destiny focus.

What is still unconfirmed

Bungie said new Destiny stories and new games are in development. It did not say Destiny 3.

Worth remembering: the last major non-sequel Destiny project did not survive. Payback, a third-person Destiny spin-off inspired by Warframe and Genshin Impact, was cancelled in June 2024 with most of its team moved to Marathon.

Also unconfirmed as of this writing: a specific dev diary schedule, a return of weekly TWID posts, and any reversal of the Monument of Triumph Eververse and Bright Dust changes.

What to do in Destiny 2 right now

If you are reinstalling ahead of the unvaulting, the fastest current Tier 5 armor route goes through Master Lost Sectors. Completing one with a full engram inventory pushes the reward to the Tower Postmaster as an unopened engram, and those engrams decrypt into Ferropotent, Smoke Jumper or Techsec pieces rather than the Lost Sector's intended set.

This is a bug, not a feature. It survived because the game was in maintenance mode. Now that Bungie is actively working on Destiny 2 again, assume it can be patched.

Marathon's September content moved to December, and fixed seasonal deadlines were dropped entirely.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Destiny 2 unvaulting coming out?

Bungie has not given a date. It said the work is technically difficult and will take months. Paul Tassi's reported estimate is sometime next year, which is a projection rather than a Bungie commitment.

Which campaigns and raids are coming back first?

Bungie committed to all vaulted content but has not published an order or a first wave. Any specific ordering you see is speculation.

Has Bungie announced Destiny 3?

No. Bungie said new Destiny stories and new games are in development without naming a numbered sequel.

Will the unvaulted content be free?

Reporting indicates it is expected to be free for all players including those who never bought the expansions, but Bungie has not confirmed pricing.

Is Destiny 2 still playable right now?

Yes. It stayed online and playable after the June 2026 Monument of Triumph update even when live development had ended.

Is Marathon being cancelled?

No. Bungie moved its September content into the December 8 Symbiosis update and dropped fixed seasonal deadlines, but development continues.

Does the Lost Sector Postmaster armor trick still work?

It was working as of mid-2026 and survived because the game was in maintenance mode. With Destiny 2 back in active development, treat it as patchable.
