Destiny 2 Wavesplitter Build: Permanent Suppression on Prismatic Hunter
It Took Me 112 Days To FINALLY Make This Build!
Destiny 2 update 9.7.0.3. Build verified for the Artifact 2.0 and Armor 3.0 sandbox introduced in Monument of Triumph.
Most Wavesplitter guides you will find were written for a version of the game that no longer exists. They describe an artifact system Bungie replaced, quote a catalyst bonus the weapon does not have, and spell the weapon's name wrong. This build is assembled for the current sandbox.
What this build does
You hold the trigger. Orbs of Power keep the beam locked at maximum power, which suppresses most regular enemies, and a Void overshield keeps a flat weapon damage buff running on top of it. Everything else in the loadout exists to keep orbs on the ground and the overshield up.
It is built for Grandmaster Nightfalls, raids, dungeons and solo endgame content, where add control and survivability matter more than a single large damage phase.
Sandbox state: what changed since the older guides
Harmonic Laser cycles the beam through three power levels on its own. Supercharged Battery is what lets you skip the ramp and sit at the top tier.
Monument of Triumph introduced Artifacts 2.0. Instead of one rotating seasonal artifact, you now have access to seven artifacts from the game's past, adjusted for the current sandbox, and you equip one at a time. Artifact selections save into loadouts. They are disabled in Competitive Crucible and Trials of Osiris (Shattered Vault, reflecting Bungie's dev insights).
Champion counters moved into weapons. Every weapon carries an anti-Champion effect based on its frame or intrinsic trait, applied the moment a valid shot lands. Wavesplitter's assignment is Disruption, which makes it strong against Overload Champions.
Radiant and Volatile Rounds no longer stun Barrier Champions. Both now grant 10% increased weapon damage against Champions instead. Any guide telling you to run Volatile for Barrier coverage predates this.
Two ability changes matter for this loadout. The Grapple melee boss damage bonus from the Grenade stat was cut by 50%, and its Grenade and Melee stat bonuses are now additive rather than multiplicative. Separately, the maximum active ability cooldown bonus from stats dropped from 190% to 125%, so heavily optimised ability loops regenerate slower than they used to (Kyber's Corner, summarising Bungie's Abilities and Armor preview).
The upside: Bungie ended active development on Destiny 2 after the June 2026 update while keeping the game online, so this loadout is not going to be patched out from under you.
How Wavesplitter actually works
The Void Super is not optional. It is what makes Facet of Purpose hand you a Void overshield on every orb pickup rather than some other buff.
Harmonic Laser
The beam cycles through three power levels while you hold the trigger, in a fixed pattern that resets when you release. In PvE the medium tier adds 32.2% damage over base and the high tier adds 68.7%. In PvP those same tiers add only 3% and 6.25%, which is why the gun is a PvE pick. These figures come from community testing rather than Bungie, but they are documented and stable.
Supercharged Battery
Collecting an Orb of Power grants a window of maximum power that begins with an automatic reload, and sustained fire during that window suppresses targets. This is the whole build. Suppression shuts down regular enemies outright, and locking the top tier removes the damage ramp entirely.
Your job in every encounter is to never let that window lapse.
The catalyst
Wavesplitter had no catalyst until Monument of Triumph, which added one as part of a batch covering every Exotic that was still missing one. It carries two perks, Detonator Beam and Attrition Orbs: keeping the beam on a target triggers localised explosions and generates Orbs of Power.
Read that second perk again. The catalyst makes the gun feed its own Supercharged Battery loop. It is the single most important acquisition in this build.
It drops from ritual playlists, meaning Vanguard Ops, Crucible and Gambit, or from Exotic Order turn-ins at the Seasonal Hub.
Note that the catalyst does not raise the weapon's ammo generation stat. Older guides claim a +30 bonus taking it from 50 to 80; that figure comes from a years-old datamine of a different catalyst spec and does not describe the catalyst in the game today. Wavesplitter's ammo generation stat is 50.
Fortune's Favor and the overshield loop
Read the perk carefully: the damage bonus applies while you hold any overshield, not only the one these boots generate.
Fortune's Favor is an exotic Hunter leg armor introduced in Renegades. Its perk, Kismet, recharges your shields into an overshield after a final blow at full health or after an extended period out of combat. While you hold any overshield, your weapons gain accuracy, stability, handling and damage against combatants, and a final blow grants a short burst of mobility once the overshield is depleted.
Community testing puts the damage portion at 15% against combatants, 20% for heat-based weapons, and confirms it stacks with other empowering weapon buffs.
The important word is "any". The overshield does not have to come from the boots. Overshield from a fragment, an artifact perk or an armor set bonus triggers the same buff, which is why this pairs so cleanly with a Void subclass.
Prismatic Hunter setup
Super: Shadowshot: Deadfall, for tether debuffs and add control.
Class ability: Gambler's Dodge, which also recharges your melee near enemies.
Melee: Threaded Spike.
Grenade: Grapple.
Aspects
Ascension converts an air move into your dodge, jolts nearby enemies and grants Amplified to you and nearby allies, which adds damage resistance and reduces enemy accuracy against you. Its damage now scales with Class stat above 100.
Threaded Specter spawns a Strand clone on class ability use that pulls aggro and bursts into Threadlings. Its damage also scales with Class stat above 100. Against anything that focuses fire, the clone buys you the seconds you need to collect orbs.
Fragments
Facet of Purpose grants a buff on Orb of Power pickup based on your Super element. With a Void Super that is a Void overshield, which is the cleanest possible feed into Fortune's Favor.
Facet of Dawn makes you Radiant on powered melee hits. Threaded Spike and the second hit of Grapple melee both proc it.
Facet of Protection grants damage resistance when you are surrounded by combatants. This is the correct name; several guides call it "Faster Protection", which is not a fragment.
Facet of Hope speeds class ability regeneration while you hold any elemental buff. You will almost always hold one.
Facet of Solitude applies Sever on rapid precision hits, reducing the damage the affected enemies deal.
Artifact: run the Tablet of Ruin
Every part of the loadout below exists to keep this circle turning. Break any one link and the build drops back to an ordinary trace rifle.
Of the seven artifacts available, the Tablet of Ruin is the trace rifle specialist, and it is the correct pick for this build. Its relevant perks:
Harsh Refraction - trace rifles deal more damage to targets carrying a matching elemental debuff. Wavesplitter is Void, so any Void debuff turns this on.
Volatile Marksman - rapid Void precision hits and final blows grant Volatile Rounds, and the detonations grant class ability energy.
Maligned Harvest - rapidly applying Volatile makes your next Void damage create a weakening pulse.
Void Flux - defeating weakened targets with a Void weapon spreads Volatile to nearby enemies.
Beam Medic - rapid trace rifle final blows heal you and nearby allies. Underrated in Grandmasters.
Elemental Siphon - rapid Kinetic or Super-matching kills create an elemental pickup, and pickups grant matching Super energy.
You get seven mod slots. Tier 1 mods can fill all seven, Tier 2 mods are restricted to the last five, and Tier 3 is capped at two (Gaming ProMax).
The alternative is the Hunter's Journal, which trades the trace rifle damage perk for stronger sustain on Prismatic. It carries Void Hegemony, which grants a small Void overshield on defeating weakened targets for Void and Prismatic subclasses, plus Expanding Abyss for extra Void damage against weakened targets and Radiant Orbs for Radiant on orb pickup. If you find yourself dying more than you find yourself short on damage, swap to it.
Do not run the Encrypted Data Disk here. It is the Sword and Kinetic artifact and has almost nothing for a trace rifle.
Armor, stats and mods
Seven slots, one artifact at a time. Harsh Refraction is the perk that justifies picking this one over the Hunter's Journal.
Stat priorities
Armor 3.0 stats are Weapons, Health, Class, Grenade, Melee and Super.
Weapons: highest priority. It drives weapon damage and special ammo brick size, which is the same thing as Wavesplitter uptime.
Class: second, and more valuable than it used to be. Both of your aspects now scale their damage with Class stat above 100.
Health: do not zero it. This build parks you in the open while you hold a beam.
Melee: around 50 is enough to fully refund Threaded Spike off a Gambler's Dodge near enemies. Past that, returns drop off.
Grenade: moderate. Grapple is still worth running for repositioning and Radiant, but its boss damage scaling was cut, so do not build around it.
Super: lowest. Deadfall is useful, not load-bearing.
Monument of Triumph added six armor archetypes. Powerhouse rolls Weapons as its primary stat with Super secondary, and Reaver rolls Class primary with Melee secondary. Those two map onto this build better than anything else; target them with Ghost Armorer mods, which now hit your chosen archetype roughly one roll in two. All Armor 3.0 Exotics now come with Tier 5 stats, so Fortune's Favor does not need rechasing unless you want a specific archetype.
Mods
The shape of the mod loadout is: orb generation on the helmet, melee-to-energy conversion on the gauntlets, special ammo generation on the chest, Void surge and scavenger on the legs, and orb collection on the class item. Mod names and values have shifted across Armor 3.0 and Monument of Triumph, so confirm each one in the armour screen before you commit materials. In particular, the surge mods describe their bonus as a small damage increase rather than a published percentage; the 17% figure circulating in older guides is not confirmed for the current sandbox.
Armor set bonuses worth chasing
Atheon's Memory from Vault of Glass is the strongest fit. Its 2-piece, Radiolaria Breach, grants a temporary Health stat bonus after an Orb of Power pickup when your shields next break. Its 4-piece, Collective Power, creates an Orb of Power from sustained damage whenever you have a subclass buff active (blueberries.gg, Dot Esports). Sustained damage while holding a subclass buff describes this build at all times, and orbs generated where you are standing mean you never walk into a line of fire to maintain Supercharged Battery.
Nezarec's Nightmares from Root of Nightmares is the Void-leaning raid alternative, with Bad Dreams as its 2-piece.
Exodus Down is the pick if you want survivability over orb throughput: its 2-piece collects nearby orbs and ammo when your shields break, and its 4-piece heals and grants damage resistance whenever you gain, lose or spend an Armor Charge.
None of these is required. The build works on any high-stat armor.
How to play it
Class stat earns its place twice over now that both Ascension and Threaded Specter scale their damage past 100.
Open by dodging into the pack. The Specter takes the attention, Ascension jolts and Amplifies, and you start the beam on whatever is closest. The first kills generate orbs; walk over them and the beam locks at full power.
From there it is a loop. Beam, collect, dodge, melee to refresh Radiant, beam again. Rotate Threaded Spike and Grapple melee rather than spamming one.
Save the tether for Champions, bosses and the moments where a room gets ahead of you. Overload Champions are the exception: Wavesplitter stuns those itself.
Where this build struggles
Burst damage phases. A trace rifle with a special ammo economy is not a boss-melting setup, and no amount of orb generation changes that. Bring a Void heavy for damage phases so your surge mods and scavenger apply to both weapons.
It also depends on bodies. In sparse encounters with few enemies, orb generation dries up, Supercharged Battery lapses, and the gun drops back to its damage ramp.
How to get the gear
Wavesplitter: exotic engrams and rare world drops, and it appears in Xûr's Strange Gear Offers inventory. It was originally a PlayStation exclusive and is now on all platforms, so check Collections if you have ever earned it.
Catalyst: ritual playlists (Vanguard Ops, Crucible, Gambit) or Exotic Order turn-ins at the Seasonal Hub.
Fortune's Favor: guaranteed from finishing the Renegades campaign on Legendary difficulty, or as a random drop from the Lawless Frontier. Once unlocked, you can focus additional rolls through Master Rahool.
Key takeaways
Wavesplitter's power comes from one loop: orbs lock the beam at maximum and add suppression.
The catalyst generates its own orbs, which is what closes the loop. Prioritise it.
Fortune's Favor adds roughly 15% weapon damage whenever you hold any overshield, from any source.
Facet of Purpose with a Void Super turns every orb pickup into that overshield.
Run the Tablet of Ruin, not the Encrypted Data Disk. You get seven perk slots.
Wavesplitter counters Overload Champions on its own.
Weapons and Class are your top two stats, and Class now scales both aspects' damage above 100.
FAQ
Is Wavesplitter still good in Destiny 2?
Yes, in sustained-fire content. Its suppression on Orb of Power pickup is rare utility, it counters Overload Champions intrinsically, and its damage holds up in add-heavy endgame activities. It is weak in short burst damage phases and weak in PvP, where its power-level bonuses are a fraction of the PvE values.
Do you need the Wavesplitter catalyst for this build?
Close to mandatory. Its Attrition Orbs perk generates the Orbs of Power that keep Supercharged Battery active, so without it you are relying entirely on external orb sources.
Does Fortune's Favor work with overshields from other sources?
Yes. The damage and handling bonus applies while you hold any overshield, not only the one the boots generate.
What is the best Super for a Wavesplitter Hunter build?
Shadowshot: Deadfall. A Void Super makes Facet of Purpose grant Void overshields on orb pickup, which is what keeps the Fortune's Favor buff running.
Which artifact should you run with Wavesplitter?
The Tablet of Ruin. It is the trace rifle artifact and carries Harsh Refraction, which increases trace rifle damage against targets with a matching elemental debuff. The Hunter's Journal is the survivability alternative.
Can Wavesplitter stun Champions?
Yes, Overload Champions. The weapon carries Disruption as its intrinsic anti-Champion effect, and no artifact mod is needed for it.
Is this build worth setting up now that Destiny 2 is no longer receiving content updates?
Yes, and arguably more so. With the sandbox frozen, a correct loadout stays correct, where seasonal builds used to expire every few months.
