Destiny 2 Wolfsbane: God Roll, Catalysts & Full Guide

Destiny 2 Wolfsbane

How to Unlock Wolfsbane: Exotic Axe Catalysts and Perks Explained

Most Wolfsbane guides were written in the weeks after the axe launched, when catalysts were still drip-fed one per week. Follow them now and you will hunt for time gates that no longer exist, in a menu that no longer exists. Destiny 2 Wolfsbane sits in a frozen sandbox today, so the roll you build is the roll you keep. Here is the current version.

What Wolfsbane Is

Wolfsbane is an Exotic Solar Sword that swings like a two-handed battle axe, obtained from the Heliostat Exotic mission in Pinnacle Ops. It is fully craftable, it has four catalysts, and it is the only Exotic axe in the game.

The in-game classification says Sword. The animation set says something else entirely: heavy overhead chops with Iron Lord weight behind them. Per Destinypedia, the axe is an Iron Battle Axe pulled from another timeline and infused with Quicksilver, which explains both the look and the nanite mechanics bolted onto it.

  • Type: Exotic Sword (Power slot)

  • Damage: Solar

  • Ammo: Heavy

  • Impact: 62

  • Swing Speed: 40

  • Stability: 38

  • Guard Resistance: 38

  • Champion counter: Stagger (Unstoppable)

  • Craftable: Yes, 1 pattern

  • Source: Heliostat Exotic mission

Ammo capacity is not fixed. It shifts depending on which blade perks you craft, which is the whole point of the perk columns below.

The two Exotic perks

Resurgence Directive is the intrinsic: light attacks generate Sword energy and have a chance to spawn seeking Quicksilver nanites that heal you when they attach.

Nano-Assault is the Exotic trait: those attached nanites charge the blade. Once fully charged, the alternate weapon action overclocks them. Light attacks then deal increased damage, and a fully charged heavy attack produces a flaming Quicksilver swarm-nado.

The loop is simple. Swing light attacks, collect nanites, heal, charge, then dump the charge into a heavy attack. Everything else on the weapon exists to make that loop faster or safer.

How to Get Wolfsbane

Open the Director, go to the Destinations tab, and find Pinnacle Ops. Heliostat is in the activity list.

This is the first place older guides go wrong. They tell you to look in the Portal. Update 9.7.0 deprecated the Portal screen and moved Ops categories to the Destinations tab, so anyone following an October 2025 walkthrough will be hunting for a tab that was removed.

Your first run locks to Normal difficulty with fixed modifiers. Wolfsbane drops on completion. The mission takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes solo and is one of the gentler Exotic missions, built around three Psion allies you summon from rally-flag circles: one shields you from Warmind radiation, one clears webbed pathways once you charge up in Radiolaria, and one hacks terminals for you.

After that first completion, difficulty customization unlocks, which matters because every catalyst needs Master difficulty or higher.

There is no rotator to wait for. Monument of Triumph retired the legacy Exotic Mission Rotator and made every Exotic mission permanently available, so Heliostat is there whenever you want it.

Unlocking All Three Intrinsic Upgrades

Wolfsbane ships with Resurgence Directive. Three upgraded versions exist beyond it: Resurgence Directive II, III, and IV.

You unlock them by destroying nine Vex nodes across the mission, in three sets of three, and you have to break them using Wolfsbane itself. That means you need at least one completed run before you can start, since the axe is the tool.

The upgrades do not change the perk description. Destinypedia lists II, III, and IV with identical text to the base version, because what they actually provide is improved base stats rather than new behaviour. Do not expect a new mechanic at the end of the hunt.

The nodes are spread across the mission rather than clustered, so budget at least one dedicated run for the hunt. Reports of clearing all nine in a single pass do exist, but that assumes you already know every location going in.

All Four Wolfsbane Catalysts

Four catalysts exist, and all four come from datapad and console puzzles inside Heliostat on Master difficulty or higher. Normal runs will not trigger them.

  • Attrition Orbs Refit: Dealing sustained damage creates an Orb of Power. Best for fireteam content, ability-hungry builds.

  • Relentless Strikes Refit: Landing three light-attack hits in a short window grants Sword ammo. Best for extended boss damage phases.

  • Burning Ambition Refit: Sustained damage scorches the target; damaging a scorched target inflicts more scorch. Best for Solar builds already leaning on scorch and ignition.

  • Subroutine: ~Recursion: Nanites grant more health the more Nano-Assault stacks you hold; taking damage during Nano-Assault can generate nearby nanites. Best for solo endgame and survivability.

The catalysts were released one per week when the axe launched, which is why so much older content is organised around "week 1" and "week 4." That schedule finished long ago. All four are available right now, they are account-wide once unlocked, and the datapad steps carry across separate runs, so you can grab a datapad in one attempt and install it in another.

A note on Relentless Strikes Refit: some guides say it grants heavy ammo. Both light.gg and Destinypedia list Sword ammo, which is the resource the classic Relentless Strikes perk has always returned. It refills the axe, not your ammo reserves.

The Wolfsbane God Roll

Because Wolfsbane is craftable, "god roll" is a shaping decision rather than an RNG chase. You pick every column at the Enclave.

Here is what the wider player base actually settled on, drawn from light.gg's usage data across more than 57,000 tracked copies.

  • Blade 1: Honed Edge (78.7%). Alternatives: Tempered Edge (13.7%), Hungry Edge (7.4%).

  • Blade 2: Jagged Edge (92.6%). Alternative: Enduring Blade (7.3%).

  • Trait: Nano-Assault (100%). No alternative, it is fixed.

  • Handle: Tenacious Handle (74.0%). Alternatives: Unyielding Handle (17.3%), Rampager's Handle (8.6%).

The Nano-Assault plus Tenacious Handle pairing accounts for 73.38% of all rolls, with Unyielding Handle a distant second at 17.77%.

Weapon level gates

Not every option is available the moment you shape the axe. light.gg lists a required crafted weapon level against each perk.

  • Honed Edge, Jagged Edge, Nano-Assault, Tenacious Handle: Weapon level 1

  • Rampager's Handle: Weapon level 2

  • Tempered Edge: Weapon level 3

  • Unyielding Handle: Weapon level 4

  • Hungry Edge: Weapon level 5

  • Enduring Blade: Weapon level 10

The popular roll is craftable straight away, which is part of why it became the default. The survivability roll is not. Enduring Blade sits at level 10, so you will be putting kills through the axe for a while before that option opens up.

Why those picks

Honed Edge and Jagged Edge both push damage. Jagged Edge increases damage at the cost of sword ammo, and Enduring Blade does the reverse: much more ammo, less damage. The 92.6% figure tells you the community decided the ammo cost was worth paying, largely because Relentless Strikes Refit gives ammo back anyway.

The handles are not a guard column. All three disable traditional guarding in favour of offensive capability, granting damage resistance for staying in combat instead. Community documentation places Tenacious Handle at the longest and strongest damage resistance window, Rampager's in the middle, and Unyielding at the shortest, which matches the usage split above. light.gg's community research separately records a 15% damage resistance buff lasting five seconds and refreshable, triggered by two light attacks landed within three seconds. That note sits against the weapon as a whole rather than a named handle, so read it as the general shape of the effect rather than a per-handle number.

If you want survivability, go Hungry Edge and Enduring Blade with Subroutine: ~Recursion. You trade real damage for a much longer swing window in content where dying resets everything. Note the level 10 gate on Enduring Blade before you plan around it.

Craft it at the Relic in the Enclave, which is on Mars. This trips people up because the Enclave's landing zone icon sits on the Savathûn's Throne World destination map, and at least one popular guide states the crafting location as the Throne World itself. The Relic is on Mars.

What the Final Update Changed

Update 9.7.0 landed on 9 June 2026 as Destiny 2's last major patch. Three changes in it affect Wolfsbane directly, and none of them appear in guides written before that date.

Wolfsbane stuns Unstoppable Champions on its own

Anti-Champion capability is now intrinsic to weapons rather than granted by artifact mods. Wolfsbane carries Stagger properties, which counter Unstoppable Champions.

This is the most useful thing about the axe in endgame content and it costs you nothing. You no longer spend an artifact column to make it work. If you are building for Grandmaster-tier Ops or Master raids, a Heavy weapon that stuns Unstoppables while healing you is doing two jobs at once.

It can now reach Gear Tier 5

9.7.0 let crafted weapons capable of reshaping climb to Gear Tier 5. You raise the tier under Weapon Level Boost in weapon inspection, then visit the crafting table for new enhanced components. Weapons also unlock Enhanced Weapon Mods at Gear Tier 3.

Wolfsbane is craftable, so this path is open to it. Every guide published in 2025 predates the system entirely.

The reload timing was fixed

A small one, but real: 9.7.0 corrected Wolfsbane's special reload timing so it fires slightly sooner and matches the animation. If the axe felt sluggish to you a while back, that has been addressed.

The sandbox is frozen

Bungie described 9.7.0 as the final major patch, with maintenance hotfixes to follow. Everything shipped since has held to that: 9.7.0.4, the most recent update, was a storefront display fix plus a handful of Crucible-only armor and map disables. No sword or Exotic weapon tuning has landed since June. There is no next season rebalancing swords. Whatever you shape now stays correct, which changes the maths on whether the Master runs are worth your time. They are, because you are not investing against a patch that will undo it.

Builds and Pairings Worth Knowing

Wolfsbane is not competing with The Lament for raw sword DPS. The Lament had most of its old nerf reverted in 9.7.0 and remains the damage benchmark. Wolfsbane's case is sustain, add pressure, and Champion utility in one Heavy slot.

Solar builds are the natural home. Burning Ambition Refit applies scorch through sustained damage, so anything that converts scorch into ignitions compounds it. Dawn Chorus was reworked in 9.7.0 to increase ignition damage and grant melee energy from ignition damage, not just scorch damage, which makes that pairing stronger than it was.

Mantle of Battle Harmony got noticeably better for this weapon. It can now trigger its Super energy gain and weapon damage bonuses from sustained damage rather than requiring final blows. Sustained damage is exactly what a sword produces.

Skip Stronghold. 9.7.0 restricted Stronghold's infinite guard to Heavy ammo Swords, and Wolfsbane qualifies on paper. The catch is that all three Wolfsbane handles explicitly disable traditional guarding. A guard-based Exotic has nothing to hook into. Test it yourself before committing a build to it, but the perk text points one way.

Errors to Watch For in Older Guides

Cross-checking the popular Wolfsbane pages against Bungie's own data turned up a consistent set of mistakes. If you have been reading around, you may have picked up one of these.

  • Perk names. You will see "Enduring Edge" and "Tenacious Edge" written up as the blade and handle picks. The actual perks are Enduring Blade and Tenacious Handle.

  • Crafting location. The Enclave is on Mars, not Savathûn's Throne World.

  • Relentless Strikes Refit. It grants Sword ammo, not heavy ammo.

  • Swapped catalyst descriptions. At least one guide attaches the Subroutine: ~Recursion healing description to Burning Ambition Refit. They are separate catalysts with separate effects.

  • Menu path. Pinnacle Ops lives under the Director's Destinations tab now, not the Portal.

  • Time gates. Catalysts are no longer weekly-gated. All four are available immediately.

Key Takeaways

  • Wolfsbane is an Exotic Solar Sword that plays as a two-handed axe, earned from Heliostat in Pinnacle Ops under the Director's Destinations tab.

  • Your first run is locked to Normal and drops the axe on completion.

  • Nine Vex nodes, broken with Wolfsbane itself, unlock Resurgence Directive II through IV. They are stat upgrades rather than new effects.

  • All four catalysts require Master difficulty or higher, and none of them are time-gated any more.

  • The consensus shaping is Honed Edge, Jagged Edge, Nano-Assault, Tenacious Handle, matching roughly three quarters of tracked rolls.

  • Wolfsbane stuns Unstoppable Champions intrinsically since 9.7.0, with no artifact investment required.

  • Craft and reshape at the Relic in the Enclave on Mars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wolfsbane a sword or an axe?

Destiny 2 classifies it as an Exotic Sword and it uses the Sword weapon type, perks, and Heavy ammo. Visually and mechanically it swings as a two-handed battle axe with Iron Lord animations. It is the only Exotic axe in the game.

How do you get Wolfsbane in Destiny 2?

Complete the Heliostat Exotic mission, found under Pinnacle Ops in the Director's Destinations tab. Your first run is locked to Normal difficulty and Wolfsbane drops when you finish. No quest chain or prerequisite mission is required beyond launching it.

How long does the Heliostat mission take?

Roughly 20 to 30 minutes solo on a first blind run. Once you know the Psion summons, the doorway maze, and the symbol-matching puzzles, repeat runs move considerably faster.

Do I need Master difficulty for the catalysts?

Yes. All four catalysts come from datapad and console puzzles that only trigger on Master difficulty or higher. Normal runs will not give you catalyst progress, though they will still count toward Vex nodes and intrinsics.

Are the Wolfsbane catalysts still time-gated?

No. They released one per week when the axe first launched, but every catalyst has been available for a long time. You can collect all four at your own pace, and datapad progress carries between separate runs.

What is the best Wolfsbane god roll?

Honed Edge, Jagged Edge, Nano-Assault, and Tenacious Handle is the community default, used by around three quarters of tracked rolls. Pair it with Relentless Strikes Refit for boss damage or Subroutine: ~Recursion for solo survivability.

Can Wolfsbane stun Champions?

Yes. It has Stagger properties, which counter Unstoppable Champions. Since Update 9.7.0 made anti-Champion capability intrinsic to weapons, this works without any artifact mod investment.

Where do I craft and reshape Wolfsbane?

At the Relic inside the Enclave, which is located on Mars. The Enclave's landing zone appears on the Savathûn's Throne World destination map in the Director, which is why some guides misreport the location.

How many Vex nodes are there in Heliostat?

Nine, arranged in three sets of three. Each set unlocks one upgraded intrinsic: Resurgence Directive II, III, and IV. You must destroy them using Wolfsbane, so complete the mission once first.

Is Wolfsbane still worth getting?

If you want a Heavy weapon that heals you, clears adds, and stuns Unstoppable Champions without artifact support, yes. For pure boss DPS, The Lament remains the stronger sword after its damage reversion in 9.7.0.

Will Wolfsbane get nerfed or buffed later?

Update 9.7.0 was Bungie's final major patch for Destiny 2, and every update since has been maintenance only, with no weapon tuning. Barring an unexpected change, the current tuning is permanent, so anything you shape now stays valid.
