Whatchamacallit God Roll: Best PvP and PvE Perks in Destiny 2

Zavala is selling one of the most powerful smgs in Destiny 2 right now! (Gear shift is insane)

You've pulled a few Whatchamacallits from Pinnacle Ops, and they all look half-decent. Keep the wrong one and you're carrying an off-meta burst SMG that loses close-range duels. One roll changes that: Light Touch + Gear Shift on an Arc build. Here's why it works, the stats to aim for, which PvE combos are worth keeping instead, and how to farm more copies.

Quick answer

  • PvP: Light Touch + Gear Shift, Range masterwork, Ballistics mod, and a range-leaning barrel and magazine.

  • PvE: Light Touch or Enlightened Action + Jolting Feedback or Gear Shift, with Accelerated Assault as the origin trait.

The gun arrived with Monument of Triumph, Bungie's final live-service content update for Destiny 2, released June 9, 2026 (Bungie). With no planned updates left, this roll advice should hold unless a hotfix changes something.

Full perk pool: what can actually roll together

You get one perk from each column, so perks in the same column never roll together.

Each column gives you one perk, so two perks from the same column can never appear on the same gun.

  • Column 1: Enlightened Action, Headseeker, Light Touch, Collective Pugilism, Stats for All, Keep Away

  • Column 2: Gear Shift, Sword Logic, Frenzy, Rangefinder, Jolting Feedback, Dragonfly

  • Origin traits: Accelerated Assault, Problem Solver, Vanguard Determination

How Gear Shift works

Gear Shift turns the Whatchamacallit from a mid-tier burst SMG into a duel winner. Reloading after a final blow or becoming Amplified grants a stack of increased damage, up to 5 stacks. Community testing measures 15 seconds per stack, with bonuses of 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35% at one through five stacks. The buff can trigger while the weapon is stowed and refreshes each time you become Amplified.

In practice, each kill followed by a reload ramps your damage. Each Amplified proc gives a free stack without a kill. In one Crucible demonstration, five stacks pushed headshot damage to around 36-37 per bullet.

Gear Shift adds 15% damage at one stack and 35% at five, with each stack lasting 15 seconds.

Why Light Touch is the partner

Light Touch gives the weapon faster reload, handling and ADS speed while you're Amplified, radiant, or have Devour. On Arc, Amplified is the shared trigger. One proc buffs your handling and adds a Gear Shift stack at the same time. The faster reload also matters, because Gear Shift wants you reloading after kills.

Build it on Arc

Run an Arc subclass setup that makes you Amplified often. The loop then runs on its own: get Amplified, gain a free stack plus snappy handling, take the fight, reload after the kill for another stack.

Stats to aim for

  • Masterwork: Range.

  • Mod: Ballistics, which adds up to +7 range and stability when Enhanced.

  • Barrel and magazine: Range or stability options. Accurized Rounds is the most-equipped magazine.

On a Range-masterworked roll shown in Crucible testing, adding Ballistics moved range from 68 to 75 and stability from 43 to 50, with handling at 47.

How to play it in Crucible

  • Fight inside about 20 meters. That's where the bursts land consistently.

  • Avoid long, open lanes. Play cover, flags and corners where close duels happen.

  • Take smart fights. Stacks only last 15 seconds each, and dying resets your ramp. Over-challenging into a coordinated team throws away your best window.

  • Don't panic-reload. The 56-round magazine lets you chain several fights before reloading, then reload on your terms after a kill to bank a stack.

Not everyone rates it for PvP. Shacknews calls it an off-meta pick and favors Headseeker with Bait and Switch for Crucible, but Bait and Switch isn't in the current light.gg perk pool. Our view: the Gear Shift and Amplified loop is what makes the gun competitive, and passive-perk rolls don't tap into it.

Best PvE rolls

Guardian firing the Whatchamacallit in a close-range Crucible fight

The roll works best in close-range fights, inside about 20 meters.

Shacknews describes the Whatchamacallit as an add-clear specialist rather than a damage-phase weapon, and that's the right role for it. Good keeps:

  • Light Touch + Jolting Feedback: Arc ability synergy, and Jolt chains through groups of adds.

  • Enlightened Action + Gear Shift: the most common trait combo on light.gg, at 12.73% of tracked rolls.

  • Collective Pugilism + Gear Shift or Jolting Feedback: for melee-focused builds.

  • Headseeker + Sword Logic: usable, but outclassed by any Gear Shift roll.

  • Full Bore with Steady Rounds: pair these if you want range without a shaky gun, since Steady Rounds offsets Full Bore's stability penalty.

For the origin trait, Accelerated Assault is equipped on about 96% of tracked copies. It loads a little ammo from reserves and slightly raises damage during sustained fire, which suits a 56-round burst SMG. Vanguard Determination is a reasonable alternative.

How to get the Whatchamacallit

The Whatchamacallit drops only from the Pinnacle Ops playlist. After your first drop, Zavala sells copies for three Vanguard Engrams, three Vanguard Ciphers and 15,000 Glimmer. Onslaught and Contest of Elders are the most efficient farms because they have several reward chests per run, which helps with the rarer Ciphers (Shacknews). Check Zavala's offered rolls after each weekly reset before you spend materials.

Key takeaways

  • The PvP pick is Light Touch + Gear Shift on an Arc build that keeps you Amplified.

  • Gear Shift stacks up to 35% bonus damage for 15 seconds per stack.

  • Masterwork for Range, add Ballistics, and fight inside about 20 meters.

  • For PvE, keep Light Touch or Enlightened Action with Jolting Feedback or Gear Shift.

  • Farm Pinnacle Ops, then buy extra copies from Zavala.

FAQ

Is the Whatchamacallit good in PvP?

With Light Touch + Gear Shift on an Arc build, it competes in close-range fights. Without Gear Shift, most guides consider it off-meta.

What does Gear Shift do?

Reloading after a kill, or becoming Amplified, grants a damage stack. You can hold up to five stacks for up to 35% bonus damage, and each stack lasts 15 seconds per community testing.

Do I need Arc to use Gear Shift?

No. Reloading after kills still builds stacks on any subclass. Arc adds free stacks through Amplified.

Where does the Whatchamacallit drop?

Pinnacle Ops only. After your first drop, Zavala sells more copies.

Is the Whatchamacallit craftable?

No. You'll need to farm or buy rolls.

What's the best origin trait?

Accelerated Assault for most builds. Vanguard Determination is a fine alternative.
