How to Get Dead Messenger in Destiny 2 (Full 2026 Guide)
This complete Destiny 2 Vox Obscura exotic mission guide breaks down the updated 2026 reward structure, vehicle paths, and room mechanics. Whether you are assaulting the Cabal base for the first time to claim the Dead Messenger grenade launcher, unlocking craftable intrinsics, or chasing the master catalyst, this walkthrough keeps the route simple.
Dead Messenger
Almost every Dead Messenger guide still online tells you to wait for Vox Obscura to rotate back in. That advice will cost you weeks of waiting, because the rotation it refers to was deleted in June. Learning how to get Dead Messenger in Destiny 2 now takes a single session. Here is the current path, start to finish.
The short answer
Dead Messenger drops from Vox Obscura, an Exotic mission set in Meridian Bay on Mars. Since Update 9.7.0 launched on 9 June 2026, Vox Obscura sits permanently in the Pinnacle Ops node, so there is no waiting and no weekly schedule to track.
Your first clear awards a Deepsight copy of the weapon. Inspect it or dismantle it to unlock the pattern, then shape the weapon at the Relic in the Enclave. Repeat clears award the intrinsic upgrades that open up the rest of the crafting options.
You need The Witch Queen to run the mission.
Everything below is checked against the game as of Update 9.7.0.4, which shipped on 4 August 2026.
Before you start
Vox Obscura supports a fireteam of one to three players. It is timed, and it puts you in an Interceptor and a Drake Tank partway through, so it plays nothing like a standard strike.
On Power, ignore every number in older guides. Bungie's Monument of Triumph FAQ confirms the cap sits at 550 and did not rise for this update, and that returning players start at 10 Power with loot dropping at 300 and above as a catch-up.
You also need Deepsight unlocked before crafting will work. That comes from the first few missions of The Witch Queen campaign on Savathûn's Throne World, which are free to all players. Update 9.7.0 added a safety net: pick up a red border before unlocking crafting and you can now dismantle it and still bank the pattern progress.
Give yourself an unhurried first run at a comfortable difficulty. Once you know the route, the mission gets considerably quicker.
The signal towers are the mission's midpoint objective, and they stay shielded until the generators go down.
How to get Dead Messenger, step by step
Confirm you own The Witch Queen
Vox Obscura and its loot pool are gated behind The Witch Queen. The mission node will not appear without it. If you are buying in now, Bungie's Destiny 2: The Collection bundle released on 9 June 2026, so check its contents before purchasing the expansion separately.
Open the Director and go to Pinnacle Ops
Ops categories now live at the bottom of the Director on the Destinations screen. Select Pinnacle Ops, and Vox Obscura will be in the list alongside the other Exotic missions.
Do not go looking for the Legends node. Bungie's Monument of Triumph support guide confirms it was deprecated, with Exotic missions moved into Pinnacle Ops and raids and dungeons moved into their own node. Every Exotic mission now launches from the same place, so the route in our Heliostat Exotic mission walkthrough starts identically.
Difficulty and modifiers are locked in on the selection screen, so the reward tier is decided before you load in.
Set your difficulty before you launch
Pinnacle Ops activities are customisable. You pick a difficulty tier and optionally stack modifiers, and that selection determines the quality of what drops. You cannot change it once you are loading in, so decide first.
Under the old system the Exotic dropped from the base difficulty, so the lowest tier should be enough if the weapon is all you want. Catalyst upgrades need you to climb.
Clear Vox Obscura
The full objective sequence is below. The short version: fight through the airfield, take an Interceptor, then a Drake Tank, drop three signal towers, breach the bunker, and kill the boss before the timer runs out.
Claim the Deepsight drop and unlock the pattern
Your first completion awards a Deepsight version of Dead Messenger. Inspect it to claim the pattern directly, or dismantle it. Either route banks the unlock. Dead Messenger needs only one pattern, so a single clear is enough.
Shape the weapon at the Enclave
Weapons can only be shaped at the Relic in the Enclave, which you reach from the Savathûn's Throne World destination in the Director. The shaping screen walks you through picking an intrinsic, a barrel, a magazine, and traits.
Not every component is available on your first shape. Barrels, magazines, stocks, and the selectable trait unlock as you bank intrinsic upgrades from repeat clears.
Why older Dead Messenger guides send you the wrong way
Three specific instructions in the currently ranking guides are now wrong, and each of them will waste your time in a different way. The same corrections apply to most Exotic mission guides written before June, including our Derealize Exotic mission guide, which we have since corrected.
Wait for the Exotic Mission Rotator. Bungie's Update 9.7.0 patch notes state that because most Rotator missions had already been added to Pinnacle Ops, Bungie deprecated the Rotator in favour of the Pinnacle Ops versions, moving Operation: Seraph's Shield across with its weapon, catalyst, and intrinsic rewards. There is no featured mission of the week any more. Vox Obscura is always there. That change arrived alongside a long list of others in Bungie's final Destiny 2 patches.
Navigate to Destinations, then Legends. That node no longer exists.
Reach 1580 Power for the harder version. Power was rebuilt with The Edge of Fate in July 2025, and Bungie confirms the cap has stayed at 550 through Monument of Triumph. Those four-digit figures belong to a system that no longer exists.
For context, the 2022 route ran through the Operation Elbrus questline, the War Table in the H.E.L.M., and an Exotic quest called Kill the Messenger. All of that scaffolding is gone. The mission is a node you click.
Vox Obscura, objective by objective
Destinypedia's mission page lists the objective sequence, which matches what you will see on your HUD. Eight beats, in order:
Sneak into the hangar. Cabal infantry, nothing unusual.
Steal an Interceptor. The mission hands you a vehicle and expects you to use it.
Clear the airfield. Flak cannons need to come down before the next stage triggers.
Vehicular assault. Amanda Holliday drops a Drake Tank for you.
Eliminate Goliath Tanks. Two Red Legion Goliaths in the Scablands.
Destroy the signal towers. Three of them, shielded until you deal with the generators.
Blast open the bunker door. This is where Psion Spotters start calling artillery on you. Killing them stops the strikes.
Race to the control room. Clear the Psion Codewardens, then the boss.
The two named enemies are Ba'aruk, Dissident and Qabix, Insurgent. Qabix is the final encounter.
The Cabal roster is broad: War Beasts, Scorpius turrets, Legionaries, Phalanxes, Incendiors, Gladiators, Centurions, Colossi, and Threshers, alongside the Psion Conclave units. Destinypedia marks Barrier Colossi as a higher-difficulty addition and lists Unstoppable Incendiors without any such marker, so expect Unstoppable Champions at any tier and Barrier ones as you climb. Worth remembering when you pick your loadout, though note the wiki's difficulty labels predate the Portal's six-tier ladder.
The timer is the real pressure. Most first-clear failures come from lingering in the open sections rather than from any single fight.
The tank section is where most first runs lose time, and the mission is on a timer throughout.
Farming intrinsic upgrades, catalysts, and the fourth trait
Repeat clears are how the weapon actually gets good. Higher difficulty tiers pay better, and Update 9.7.0 published the ladder explicitly, which is useful because it removes the guesswork about what a given run is worth.
Normal - Grade B, Tier 1 rewards
Advanced - Grade B+, Tier 2 rewards
Expert - Grade A, Tier 3 rewards
Master - Grade A+, Tier 4 rewards
Grandmaster - Grade S, Tier 5 rewards
Ultimate - Grade S+, Tier 5 rewards
Grade targets no longer scale with your Power, and everyone in the fireteam now receives the same score. Each difficulty also has enough selectable modifiers to push you up at least one reward grade, and there is a rank up button that picks modifiers for you at random if you would rather not read them all. Our Monument of Triumph reward guide covers what else that grade feeds into.
On catalysts specifically, we want to be straight with you about what is and is not documented. The 9.7.0 notes confirm that Exotic mission catalyst and intrinsic rewards carried over into the Pinnacle Ops versions when the Rotator was retired, but Bungie has not published which of the six tiers now starts awarding Dead Messenger catalyst upgrades. Before the update, the rule was Legend difficulty or higher. Treat the upper tiers as the catalyst route, and check the reward preview on the customisation screen before you launch, since it shows what a given configuration can drop.
The selectable trait column is where the confusion sits. Competitor guides list three options. The light.gg database entry for the craftable version shows four: Thresh, Unrelenting, Demolitionist, and Turnabout.
Turnabout grants an overshield when you break a combatant's elemental shield or the shield of a Guardian in their Super. Destinypedia describes it differently, as the original catalyst that was converted into a trait granted automatically rather than one you unlock and grind kills for. The two sources agree on what Turnabout does and disagree on how you get it. Check the trait column on your own crafted copy before planning a farm around it.
What Dead Messenger actually does now
Two intrinsic perks define the weapon.
Trinary Vision makes it a one-shot handheld grenade launcher whose projectiles release a fan of three energy waves on contact with the ground. The Fundamentals lets you cycle the damage type between Void, Arc, and Solar, and grants a temporary damage increase when you apply or gain an elemental buff or debuff matching the weapon's current element.
That second perk was bugged until recently. Update 9.7.0 lists a fix for Hard Light, Borealis, and Dead Messenger where The Fundamentals could only be activated once per life. Bungie did not say how long the bug had been live, but if you have tried this weapon before and found the element swap unreliable, that is the likely reason.
The bigger shift is Anti-Champion 2.0. With anti-Champion mods removed from the artifact, every weapon now carries an intrinsic anti-Champion effect based on its archetype, and the effect applies as soon as you fire and hit a target. Wave frame breach grenade launchers are on the Unstoppable list, which means Dead Messenger stuns Unstoppable Champions with no mod investment at all. Destinypedia flags the weapon as anti-Unstoppable, matching the archetype table. That matters most in content with a dense Champion roster, which our Equilibrium dungeon encounter guide goes through encounter by encounter.
Special ammo weapons also picked up a 20% damage increase against elite combatants in the same update, and crafted weapons capable of reshaping can now reach Gear Tier 5. Bungie notes that only weapons with an Enhanced Intrinsic get the additive stat boost that comes with the higher tier, so level the weapon before expecting the full benefit.
Core stats, from the light.gg database entry: 72 rounds per minute, magazine of 1, blast radius 50, velocity 73, stability 27, handling 40, reload speed 50, aim assistance 78, and airborne effectiveness 6. That last figure is the honest weakness. This is not a weapon you use in the air.
Trinary Vision releases a fan of three waves on ground contact, which is what makes the weapon an ad-clear option.
The best crafted roll
The community has converged hard on a handling-first build, and the equip data backs it up. Across roughly 24,600 tracked copies of the craftable version on light.gg, High-Velocity Rounds appears on 96.7% of rolls and Quick Launch on 55.1%, with Volatile Launch a distant second at 17.2%. That data reflects perks players have equipped rather than a considered verdict, but the concentration is hard to argue with.
The stock slot is the only genuinely contested choice. Hand-Laid Stock sits at 55.1% and Short-Action Stock at 39.7%.
For PvE, we would run Quick Launch, High-Velocity Rounds, and Short-Action Stock, with Demolitionist in the trait slot. Demolitionist is the strongest fit because the weapon clears trash quickly, so grenade energy comes back fast, and throwing the grenade reloads the tube for you. On a single-round magazine, a free reload is worth more than it sounds.
For PvP, the same three handling perks hold up, and Thresh is the safer trait pick since Unrelenting needs multiple rapid kills to matter and rarely gets them in a duel.
Weigh this honestly, though: wave frames have not been a dominant archetype for a while, and Dead Messenger asks for your Energy slot. What it pays back is free Unstoppable stagger plus on-demand element matching. Judge it on that rather than on raw damage. If you want a Special slot option that leans harder on damage, our Wolfsbane weapon performance breakdown makes the comparison.
The rest of the Vox Obscura loot pool
Every clear also rolls from the Season of the Risen weapon set: Sweet Sorrow, Under Your Skin, Recurrent Impact, Thoughtless, Piece of Mind, and Explosive Personality. There is also a chance at the Ivory Empress Exotic Sparrow on any completion. Several guides report the Tusked Allegiance armor set dropping here too, though we could not confirm that against a wiki or official reward list, so treat it as likely rather than certain.
Access to that seasonal gear changed with Update 9.7.0. Rotator missions that previously locked seasonal rewards behind ownership of the matching Season Pass or Deluxe Edition now surface those rewards through the Classic Collector modifier on the Pinnacle Ops version of the mission. If the older weapons are what you are after, that modifier is the switch to look for on the customisation screen.
The same update also doubled Deepsight drops on legacy Rotator missions when the legacy skull is applied, which shortens the grind if you are chasing the full set of Season of the Risen patterns rather than just the Exotic. Bungie lists the legacy skull and Classic Collector as separate changes and does not say whether they are the same toggle, so check both on the customisation screen.
Mistakes that cost you a run
Forgetting the element resets. Destinypedia notes that Dead Messenger reverts to Void whenever you are resurrected or enter a new activity, the same as Hard Light and Borealis. If your build depends on a specific element, swap it back after every death.
Picking difficulty too late. The customisation screen is the only place you set it. Once you are loading in, the reward tier is locked.
Soloing your first clear. It is playable alone, but the timer is unforgiving while you are still learning the tank sections. Bring a fireteam for the first run.
Chasing a pattern you already have. Check Triumphs under Patterns & Catalysts first. Plenty of returning players unlocked this one in Season of the Witch and forgot. Our Darkest Depths triumph walkthrough covers reading that screen properly.
Assuming your old copy is craftable. Two versions of this weapon exist in the game. The Season 16 drop is flagged as not craftable; the Season 22 version is the craftable one. With no further content updates planned, that split is unlikely to change. If you have an old Dead Messenger in your vault with no recipe attached, that is why, and you will need a fresh Deepsight clear. Telling the two copies apart is quicker if you are managing your vault with DIM.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dead Messenger still obtainable in 2026?
Yes. Vox Obscura is listed among the currently available Exotic missions in Bungie's activities guide, and it is permanently available in Pinnacle Ops. Update 9.7.0 was the final major content update, and nothing in it removed the mission. Bungie states that all content present as of that update remains available, though it is no longer planning new live-service releases. For where the franchise goes next, see what we know about Destiny 3.
Do I need The Witch Queen to get Dead Messenger?
Yes. Vox Obscura and its loot pool require The Witch Queen expansion. Without it, the mission node will not appear in Pinnacle Ops. Bungie's Destiny 2: The Collection bundle is worth checking first if you are buying in now.
How long does Vox Obscura take?
A practised fireteam gets through it well inside the timer. A first run takes longer, because the vehicle sections and the route to the bunker are not obvious. Knowing where to go matters more here than raw damage.
Can you solo Vox Obscura?
Yes, and plenty of players do. The timer makes it noticeably harder alone, particularly across the open airfield and Scablands. Run it with a fireteam first, then solo it once you know the layout. Finding two other people is still straightforward, as the current Destiny 2 player counts show.
How many times do I need to run it?
Once for the weapon and the pattern. After that, each clear banks an intrinsic upgrade, so most players run it several more times to open up the barrel, magazine, stock, and trait options.
What is the Dead Messenger catalyst?
It grants Turnabout, an overshield for breaking a combatant's elemental shield or the shield of a Guardian in their Super. It pairs unusually well here, since you can switch elements on demand to break whatever shield is in front of you.
Is Dead Messenger good in PvE?
Solid rather than dominant. Its draw now is that it stuns Unstoppable Champions intrinsically and matches its damage type to any shield you meet, which frees up build space elsewhere. As a raw damage pick it sits behind stronger Special ammo options.
Why does my Dead Messenger not have a crafting option?
You have the original Season 16 version, which is flagged as not craftable in the game's database. The craftable version arrived separately in Season of the Witch. Run Vox Obscura and claim the Deepsight drop to unlock it.
Does Dead Messenger still change elements?
Yes. Holding the reload button cycles it between Void, Arc, and Solar. Update 9.7.0 fixed a bug that limited the swap to once per life, so it now works as intended. Remember that it defaults back to Void when you die or start a new activity.
What else drops from Vox Obscura?
The Season of the Risen weapon set and a chance at the Ivory Empress Sparrow. Seasonal weapons that once required Season Pass ownership are now reachable through the Classic Collector modifier.
